Amawalk English Cocker |
||
Our introduction to English Cockers came in 1970 when we aquired a red and white male from Maisie Minot. A second orange roan female joined us two years later. English Cockers are rather like potato chips - you just can't stop. I had joined Taconic Hills Kennel Club
to take obedience courses and
within a few years I got
involved helping with dog shows and decided it might be fun to have
a English Cocker puppy to show. Even with a
few errors here and there and some health problems I was hooked. I decided to find another female
to start my "official" breeding program
with. I found it very difficult as most breeders did
not even want to discuss a "show" female with
someone who did not have a fenced yard, had little show experience, limited
funds and three small children. Finally I located a girl who
had a wonderful pedigree and was extremely sound.
She was purchased as an adult. Her first two breedings produced uterine
infections and no puppies. The third breeding to a different male produced
a litter of 6 but 3 days after whelping one of the puppies died and the cause
was another infection in mom that had gotten into the milk. The remaining puppies had to be hand raised
away from their frantic mother whose infection could not be controlled and she had
to be spayed a week later. Thankfully one of the girls from that litter
became Ch. Amawalk's Lucky Charm or "Love Bug" which was further abbreviated to "Bugs" -- our true breeding foundation. Below are some of our current and favorite stars!!
